For the film assignment, my group and I chose “La La Land.” As a group, we came to a consensus on this movie because we all love musicals. I think this movie overall does a great job in the depiction of Hollywood because it gives it in two different aspects. The first aspect is the opportunity and dreams that Hollywood entails. Mia, an ambitious actress and central part of the movie, landed many roles in big films by putting herself out there at multiple auditions. Although it was difficult at first, she was able to prevail with many gigs, a plus of being in Los Angeles. On the flip side, Los Angeles can be a really dark place. Sebastian, the other main character and keyboardist, sacrificed his own love of music to create music he doesn’t enjoy in order to make a living for himself. The problem with creating music in L.A. is that if you aren’t already big, you’re most likely going to end up playing on third street promenade with a big tip jar.
“La La Land” portrays the classic ambition for love in Hollywood and how difficult it is to infuse it with your daily life. As Mia and Sebastian’s success grew, they were faced with decisions that caused feud in their relationship. As a result, the dreams they worked for were threatened and eventually faced with splitting apart by the end of the film. Another vital component of motion pictures that the director tried to represent was the change in lighting depending on the emotions of the actors. For example, in the last couple scenes of the film, it showed a plot twist of what life would have been like had Mia and Sebastian stayed together. The skies were blue, lots of smiles, and lots of light in each scene but the final scene when the plot revealed that they weren’t together anymore it was very dimly lit, etc. All in all, I extremely enjoyed this film and wouldn’t hesitate to watch it again.
